Agenda Overview

Conference Overview

The development of the country’s mining downstream industry to process raw commodities into greater value added products is expected to remain one of the government’s top agenda in mining sector in 2020.

President Joko Widodo (Jokowi) in his opening speech at the Indonesian Mining Association (IMA) 2019 Award event recently highlighted the need for mining industry to speed up the development of downstream industry in mineral and coal sector to help provide multiple economic benefits to the country including helping to resolve the perennial trade deficit problem.

Currently, smelter development largely focused on nickel commodity.

Data from the government shows 41 smelters would be in operation through 2022, under which 35 units are nickel smelters, four copper smelters, and two anode mud refineries.

The government expect miners also push the development of downstream industry for other key commodities of tin, copper, bauxite and coal.

In term of coal, the current weak price trend would remain the top challenges for coal miners due to various reasons of falling coal price index in international market, the amount of coal production of China, the slowing down coal trade in India and the low price of gas in Europe.

Indonesia, as the world largest thermal coal exporter, also plans to increase production to around 530 million tons in 2019, higher than the government’s initial target of 489 million tons.

Indonesia currently has 1,164 holders of Mining Business License (IUP), under which 1,148 holders of IUP are in the Production Operation stage (IUP-OP). The remaining 16 holders of IUP are in the Exploration stage.

Other challenging concerns is the declining of investment in mining sector, especially investment in mining exploration works in green field.

The Indonesia Miner conference would discuss the outlook, opportunities and challenges of mineral and coal industry. The conference would also explore trend of investment and downstream development, mining haulage and surface and underground mining.
